Born in Santa Barbara, California, Richards grew up surrounded by music. He began playing guitar at a young age and developed a passion for songwriting. In the early 1990s, he co-founded Dishwalla with bassist Scot Alexander, drummer George Pendergast, and guitarist Rodney Browning Cravens.With Richards at the helm, Dishwalla released their debut album, Pet Your Friends, in 1996. The album spawned the hit single Counting Blue Cars, which reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned the band a Grammy nomination. The album went on to sell over a million copies in the United States alone.Richards songwriting is characterized by introspective and poignant lyrics, often exploring themes of love, relationships, and social commentary.
